Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) has long enjoyed popularity as a medicinal herb. During the Middle Ages, it was cultivated in every monastery garden.
It has a calming effect on the nervous system and is therefore used to treat insomnia, nervousness or restlessness. Nevertheless, lemon balm also proves effective in soothing cramps and combating infections. The oil is obtained from the leaves, thus yielding its intense lemony fragrance.
