Passing on the tradition of a legendary recipe

Along the meanders in the Moselle lies the tranquil, idyllic spa town of Traben-Trabach – the birthplace of the Frühmesner® brand. Its venerable history goes all the way back to the middle of the 13th century: The courtyard of the monastery there (which is the origin of the

modern-day Mönchhof Eremitage® brand) served as a farmstead. Every morning, one of the monks would make the long, arduous journey up to the Count’s castle, which lay high above the Moselle valley, in order to hold matins [German: Frühmesse]. This German word is the basis for our brand name, Frühmesner.

Inspired by the story of the monastery courtyard and its legendary herb garden, herbs and plants were once again grown there after a long time lying fallow to make medicinal spa oils towards the end of the 1920s. But it was only in 1931 that the a very special bathing oil

was created once more, sold to this day in practically unchanged form under the Frühmesner® brand – after long interruptions due to war and other uncertain times (Der Klassiker: Frühmesner® bath oil)

It is only recently that a few improvements have been made to the nourishing oils – due to the latest findings from research into healthy body care – however, the basic principle of only using select botanicals remains to this day.

In addition to native herbs, Frühmesner® products also feature unique extracts from the very best harvests around the world, processed gently into nourishing essences. The famous French region of Provence, known for its vast fields of lavender and herbs, plays a major role here.

Today, the tradition of the monastery courtyard and the history of Frühmesner® are valuable to us, and we maintain them with the greatest care as regards sustainability, and continue to develop them in this direction.
